Naked Egg Rolls

| | , , ,

I love a good egg roll! In fact, that’s my favorite thing to order when we go to any sort of Asian restaurant. I think part of the reason I love them so much , besides the flavor, is that I have a true appreciation for the amount of work that goes into making them. I know people who make them often, can whip right through them, but it took some serious practice to get that good! I don’t have the time nor the desire to practice making them for myself, but I still want the egg roll and I have my littlest grandson helping me make Naked Egg Rolls today!

Naked Egg Rolls are delicious and easily adaptable for specific tastes. Make it your own and you will make it often!

In an effort to get healthier, a few years ago, I was really into Paleo and came across a version of this egg roll recipe. I tweaked it a little to better suit my tastes and Naked Egg Rolls was born. These egg rolls do not include the wrapper, which is why I call this dish, Naked Egg Rolls. Gluten is a no-no when doing paleo, so the wrapper is avoided. I have seen many gluten free wrappers since I first made this, but it tastes so good just as it is, I don’t miss the wrappers.

Naked Egg Rolls may become one of your favorite recipes! I like to use ground chicken because it is tender, not particularly fatty and it really takes on the Asian flavors. I love the nuttiness from the sesame oil, saltiness from the soy sauce, the spice from the red pepper flakes and the crunch from the carrots and cabbage.

I love that Naked Egg Rolls is a super speedy recipe to make and the leftovers taste amazing!

The beauty of Naked Egg Rolls is you can use any meat you choose. My favorite is ground chicken, but pork and beef are also excellent. I haven’t tried shrimp, but I bet that would be amazing!

To further personalize it, add any vegetables you want. I try and make this as quick and easy and possible so I use a package of pre-shredded cabbage, like you would use for coleslaw. I have added bean sprouts as well as snap peas, grated carrot and even thinly sliced jalapeños. Using things like pre-shredded cabbage cuts prep time and buying ground meats while they are on sale also makes it economical.

While this is a paleo friendly version, you can lower the carbs by omitting the carrot and using sugar substitute. If you aren’t watching carbs or gluten, you can sprinkle sliced and fried wonton wrappers over the top for extra crunch. I hope you give this a try, make it your own and make it often! Enjoy friends!

Naked Egg Rolls are my quickest and favorite economical meal. What recipe do you love to make that is speedy and inexpensive?

This as leftovers is great. I had some leftover hanger steak and this, made with the chicken, and a little Sriracha, well, I’ll say, my daughter in law and I chowed bigtime. It was absolutely incredible. We love it spicy.

I never thought I would like an eggroll without the fried wrapper. What a great find. My husband loved it as much as I did and now I want to try other naked foods.
