I don’t think I am much different than most people, I love pizza! In fact when I was a teenager, I worked at a “pizza place” and we served really, delicious food. I learned how to make the dough and the sauce from scratch and of course prep the toppings needed for that day. When we were working a shift, they allowed us to eat a meal for free. I took this opportunity to experiment with my pizza and toppings. One thing we did NOT have, was this Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce, that would have been a game changer for me.
Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce is a delicious alternative to standard tomato based pizza sauce. This is a rich, white sauce, with lots of garlic flavor.
In the beginning of course, I ate the standard pepperoni and sausage on my meal breaks, but this girl is not satisfied with the ordinary, oh no! If there are an infinite number of toppings and combinations, I am going to make as many as I can until I find several that I love. Now, there were some serious clunkers, but that’s okay. I learned something about flavor combining and tossed it in the trash, then ate a salad with the time I had left on my break. The next time it was usually tastier. All of that trial and error, has led me to this yummy pizza sauce.
If you are looking for something a little different, something that will set a regular pizza apart from the rest, this Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce is the answer. When I use this white pizza sauce, I feel like the pizzas I am making automatically become gourmet. The sauce is made from basic kitchen items you probably already have in your kitchen. Even in this time of staying at home due to the Coronavirus, we typically have milk, butter, flour and garlic. Toss in a little parmesan cheese and we are raring to go!
Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce is a pizza game changer. It takes a ho-hum pizza and turns it on its ear.
One of the things I love about this sauce is that it is so versatile. I can use it on my pizza of course, but I can also use it on pasta as an Alfredo substitute, or on flatbread topped with red onions and arugula. Just like my experimentation with pizza toppings as a teenager, I still like to mix things up and find unusual combinations. That led me to making a smoked BBQ chicken pizza with Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce. Oh my gosh is this good!
To make my smoked pizza, I started by making a homemade pizza crust. Once I had it like I wanted it, I put it on my Traeger Smoker to cook. Many people don’t know you can actually cook your pizza dough on a bbq or smoker and it is fantastic……hello, wood-fired pizza!!
Once my pizza crust was cooked, I removed it and then topped it with the Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce. I had made 2 Smoked Spatchcock Chickens on my Traeger Smoker earlier in the week, so I shredded the chicken from one of those and mixed it with bbq sauce. Once this was mixed, I generously topped the white pizza sauce with the chicken and spread that out over the top. Then, I topped that with grated mozzarella cheese and a little more parmesan and put it back on the smoker to melt the cheese and get piping hot and. Once it was off the smoker, I topped with with my 20 Minute Pickled Jalapenos for some heat. This was delicious!
My son and daughter-in-law were over for dinner that night and they made their own pizzas. I can now attest to the fact that this Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce tastes amazing on a pizza with cooked bacon and Italian sausage. My daughter-in-law made hers with everything, plus sauteed mushrooms and a raw egg in the middle . When the pizza was placed on the smoker to cook, she was sure to cook the egg just enough to let the yolk run out on the pizza when cut.
Honestly, the sky’s the limit when you find a good sauce. On occasion, I even make a batch of soft bread sticks, specifically to dip in this sauce on movie night. This garlicky white sauce is so quick and easy to make, you won’t be bogged down in a detailed, time consuming recipe. You start by melting butter in a saucepan. Then add the garlic, saute this in the butter for about 1 minute. Then you whisk in the flour and spices and cook this thick flour mixture for a minute or so, to get rid of the raw flour taste. Then slowly pour in the milk until you reach the desired thickness. Take it off the heat. Now, stir in the parmesan cheese and you are done! Easy peasy!
Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp butter
- 6 cloves finely chopped, garlic
- 3 tbsp all purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 tsp dried, oregano
- 1 cup milk
- 2/3 cup parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Over medium low heat, melt butter in a medium sized saucepan. Then add in your minced garlic and saute in the butter for about a minute.
- Whisk in the flour and all the spices and cook this thick flour mixture for another minute. Then slowly pour in the milk, while whisking, until you reach your desired thickness. It may be slightly lumpy at first, but as you continue to whisk the sauce, the lumps break down and become well incorporated in the sauce.
- Once the sauce is thickened and lumps have dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the parmesan cheese.
- You can use this immeditately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
Creamy Garlic Pizza Sauce is a recipe you can make earlier in the day in preparation for an evening meal, or earlier in the week to save yourself some time for those rushed weeknight dinners. Play with this and add in other spices if you like. I sometimes add dried basil or red pepper flakes. When I am low on milk, I substitute the milk with chicken or vegetable broth and the taste is delicious. However, if you still prefer red sauce to any other, my Homemade Spaghetti Sauce makes the perfect red sauce to top your pizza. My family has been making pizzas with this zesty sauce for years! Give either of these yummy sauces a try, I am sure it they will become your new favorites. Enjoy friends!

Great sauce. I mostly prefer the garlicky white sauce to the standard tomato sauce. But, to be absolutely clear, it’s pizza. What’s not to like?!
Can I come over on the next pizza night? 😉
We love experimenting on our pizza nights and this garlic sauce is sure to be next in line. Have you even tried canadian bacon and sauerkraut pizza? Yummm!
Thanks!!! No, I have not tried sauerkraut pizza, but we LOVE sauerkraut. What type of sauce do you use when doing the Canadian Bacon and Sauerkraut style?
