The Best Rolled Pizza Bread

| | , , , ,

This recipe for Rolled Pizza Bread has actually moved ahead of a traditional, round pizza in my house. PIZZA! I know!! Everyone puts pizza on their favorite foods list. However, an interesting phenomenon occured when I presented this bad boy for dinner, they were GOBSMACKED! I’ve always wanted to use that word. Seriously though, they were truly gobsmacked (twice in one paragraph!). I, of course made The Best Homemade Spaghetti Sauce to dip it in. This is a simple, but balanced tomato based sauce that is perfect for pasta, pizzas, and even my Baked Ravioli Casserole and even better, it is super quick to make. Anyway, I love it when I make something new for my family and it absolutely blows their hair back.

Rolled Pizza Bread is a simple dough that is flattened into a rectangle, filled with all your favorite pizza toppings, minus the sauce and rolled up and baked. Once done, you slice it and dip it in your favorite sauce. FANTASTIC!!

I know I have gone on and on about how much my family loved this, but it is no joke. We had this for dinner 3 times in one week, because they just could not get enough of it. There was even enough leftover to have for their lunch and they still wanted it for dinner. Who am I to complain? It really is a simple dough recipe and I always have a big Mason jar of my Homemade Spaghetti Sauce in the refrigerator. So, as long as I had pizza toppings on hand, I knew we were good! I even started making a double batch of dough. I divided it in half, then put the extra dough in a greased bowl, covered it with plastic wrap and placed it in the back of the fridge to have a few days later. I’m getting smarter!!

This Rolled Pizza Bread reminds me of a stromboli. I have had stromboli that look like calzones or turnovers, but I have also had them when they look rolled. This one is rolled and when you cut it, the cross section shows the spiraled layers of ooey-gooey pizza toppings and melted cheese. I like that I can choose to pick this up and eat it with my hands or I can also use a fork and knife and still get a nice, hearty forkful.

Rolled Pizza Bread is DELICIOUS!! It is easy to make, even the kids can help and it feeds an army!!!

To make Rolled Pizza Bread, you start with the dough. If you are not comfortable making things that call for yeast, I challenge you to make this dough. It is a very simple recipe and I think you can do it. Worst case scenario, you chuck it in the trash and order take out. It’s dough, only dough! You can master this and impress the heck out of your family, give it a try!

When making the dough, you will place warm water in the bottom of a large bowl. You don’t have to use a thermometer to know it’s the right temp. Dip you finger in the water, if it is neither hot nor cold, almost like you can’t feel the water, it is correct. If you are still not sure, error on the side of cooler water. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar over the top of the water, give it a quick stir and let it sit there doing its thing for a minute or two. Then, add in all the remaining ingredients; salt, oil and flour. Using a wooden spoon, stir it together. When it gets tough to keep stirring, sprinkle a little flour (1-2 tablespoons) on to the counter and dump the dough onto the flour you just sprinkled on the counter.

You’re doing great, lets bring it home! Now, you are going to knead the bread into a ball. Come back!! Seriously! You can do this!! Focus! To knead the dough that you just dumped on the counter, you are going to gather it into sort of a ball first. Then push the dough away from you with the heel of your hand, slightly pushing it into the counter as you push. Then with your fingers, fold it in half back towards yourself, then give it a little turn. Then again, push the dough away from you with the heel of your hand, fold towards yourself, give a little turn, push away with the heel of your hand and repeat this for about 2 minutes. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should stop looking shaggy and become a little smoother looking. Kneading is something you get better at the more you do it.

Once you have kneaded your dough for about 2 minutes, put a little oil in a bowl and take the ball of dough and place it into the oiled bowl, giving the dough a little swirl in the bowl, so it doesn’t stick to the sides of the bowl as it rises. Then cover it with a clean kitchen towel or saran wrap for about an hour or double in size. You did it!! Well done!

Once the dough has risen, lightly sprinkle flour onto your work surface and dump the dough out. This makes a verrrry large Rolled Pizza Bread, so at this point, you can cut the dough in half and make two rolls or keep going to make the HUGE one. We are going to say you cut your dough in half, it is much more manageable. You are going to lightly press the dough into rectangular shape with your fingers. Then, using a rolling pin, roll it out thinner to about 1/4-1/2 inch thickness. Once you have gotten it to the appropriate size (it is still pretty big) you will sprinkle mozzarella cheese onto the dough, then sprinkle parmesan cheese, and now toppings of your choice. I like pepperoni, cooked italian sausage, olives and Homemade Pizza Seasoning. Opa likes all of that without olives, but wants roasted mushrooms and jalapenos instead.

Now that you have it loaded with the toppings you like, you will roll it. Start from one of the long sides. You are going to roll this up like a pinwheel. Try and make the rolls as tight as you can, it makes it easier to eat when cooked. Pinch the seam of dough onto the pinwheel to seal when done rolling. Pinch the ends and with your finger, now push the pinched end inward and pinch end again to seal dough. Now, carefully pick up the long roll and put it seem side down onto a baking sheet. Make several angled slits across the top to allow steam to vent while cooking. Ta-dah!!! You did it! If you have another section to do, repeat this and maybe change up the toppings on that one.

Kids love to have this for slumber parties, yet it is impressive enough for company. It is great to make for a buffet, and just put a bowl of warm sauce out next to it. You can make this earlier in the day and keep it in the fridge after you have rolled it up and take out to bring it to room temperature before baking. I absolutely love pizza. I usually do a New York fold when I eat pizza. This! This takes it to an all new level. Rolled pizza! Just like stromboli. And this recipe is so easy. I can easily have this 2 times a week. What awesomeness.
