Snickerdoodles

| | , ,

My family loves cookies and I love to bake. I think though, they would be happy with my basic 3 cookies. However, I like a bigger variety. I mean, what honest to goodness baker would stop at 3 types of cookies? A baking fraud, that’s who!

Snickerdoodles are easy to make and sure to be a hit!

When we lived in Washington early in my marriage, we had a neighbor across across the street who shared my affection for baking and made me a batch of Snickerdoodles that were excellent! I didn’t really even know what Snickerdoodles were before my neighbor enlightened me. Fortunately, she shared her recipe and my basic 3, became my basic 4, on the spot.

The thing that makes Snickerdoodles amazing and unforgettable is the soft middle, slightly crunchy edges and a buttery, cinnamon flavor with a vanilla kick. They are fabulous!

When I was a teen, I loved to cook and bake, but I just made what my family normally made. I hadn’t gotten to the recipe exploration and development stage of my life. After getting married and having close to no money, I had to be creative and learn to cook and bake from scratch in order to afford a variety of meal options that tasted great and satisfied the soul.

I was always fascinated with the name Snickerdoodles and wondered how this name came to be. Chocolate Chip cookies are a giveaway, but Snickerdoodles don’t lend a hint to what goes into them. Apparently, Snickerdoodles are German in origin and an adaptation of the word Schneckennudelin, meaning “snail noodles” These cookies taste and look nothing like I’d expect a snail noodle to, fortunately!

Snickerdoodles are soft in the middle, slightly crunchy on the edges with a cinnamon vanilla flavor.

These Snickerdoodles are perfect with a cup of coffee or a glass of ice cold milk!

One of the best things about this cookie recipe is that it is a no-fail recipe. I have been making these for over 20 years and never had a bad batch. They are always soft in the middle, which for me is essential unless the cookie is proclaiming itself to be “crunchy” in some way.

You first start by creaming the butter and shortening together, add eggs, sugar and vanilla. Once this is all mixed well, add the dry ingredients and incorporate . You then shape these into balls and roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture, then place on a cookie sheet and bake. Easy Peasy!

I remember living in Washington. The rainy days, that were cold and gloomy. I’d come inside from playing with the boys, and there was a fire in the woodstove . As the warmth started to immediately overcome the cold dampness, I catch a whiff of these cookies baking and oh the joy of being home with family. What an awesome memory.
