Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

| | , , , ,

I like to have a variety of spice mixes on hand to make preparing dinner easier. I typically add ingredients to my meals as I go. This allows me to tweak it a bit for different spiciness levels. The one spice mix that I typically leave the same every time would be my Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix. This makes Taco Tuesday night quick and easy!

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is quick to put together and saves you time and money!

I can go through quite a few packets of taco seasoning in my home each month. It can add up to quite a few dollars, but even more frustrating is when I am making a recipe and don’t have any packets on hand. This is what prompted me to start making my own. My Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is better than store bought, because I can make it and store it AND my recipe doesn’t contain all the fillers and preservatives that the store bought version does.

When I make my own spice mixes, I make them in bulk. When I say “in bulk” some people get a bit concerned about storing it. I am not talking about huge volumes here people. I typically use small mason jars or other small airtight containers that I can keep up in my spice cabinet. The average packet of store bought taco seasoning contains 2 tablespoons of spice mixture. I often cook in bigger batches, so that requires me to buy several packets for one recipe. When I make my own, I have at least enough on hand to make a few meals.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is a wonderful balance of spices that are perfect for tacos, burritos, salads, dip and so much more!

This is so easy to make and takes just 5 minutes! First, you will want to make sure you have all of the ingredients on hand. Then, in a small bowl, measure out the desired quantity. Stir to combine ingredients, making sure they are well incorporated. Once you have tasted the finished batch, you can alter it to the heat level of your choice. I like to make my spice mixture medium in heat. This enables me to top my recipes with other spicy extras, such as my recipe for easy pickled jalapenos, which are ready in just 20 minutes!

This Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is of course delicious for tacos, but don’t forget to use it to season a pot of beans, taco soup or 7-layer dip. Use it as a rub for steaks or in my favorite Homemade Tamale Pie. If you store it in an airtight container, this will last as long as the spices do, which is typically years. Let’s whip up a batch, so you are ready to go when these wonderful flavors are calling you! Enjoy friends!
