Homemade Brown Sugar

| | , ,

I have toyed with the idea of putting up a quick article on how to make Homemade Brown Sugar, because the taste is so much better than store bought. I figured if you were all jumping into your Holiday baking, you may want to have an ingredient you can make at home in any portion and use it to turn up the flavor of your baked goods.

Homemade Brown Sugar is super easy to make and only take a couple minutes, but the flavor is far better than anything you will ever buy at the store!!!

When I say I toyed with the idea of showing you how to make Homemade Brown Sugar, the thing that stopped me was the simplicity of it and my concern that people would just respond with, “DUH!” However, while I was at work the other day, I took an informal survey with people about baking and asked how many of them make their own brown sugar and not one, even knew that you could do that at home.

Now, these are not stupid people. I just think it never occurred to them that this was something that you could do in minutes and used to be done regularly. Nowadays, there is little exposure to someone that knows “how to” or still does these “old school” things. In this culture of families separated by great distance, people do what they know and typically what they know is somehow relegated to convenience.

Homemade Brown Sugar is 2 ingredients and about 3 minutes in your stand mixer. It doesn’t get much easier than that!!

The thing that struck me, was just how accustomed we are to buying everything we need on a whim. Just minutes from the nearest grocery store, it doesn’t seem that inconvenient. There was a time when people lived too far from town to make their way to the store for something as basic as brown sugar, if they ran out. They went to town to stock up, not “pick up a few things.”

When I started this blog, one of my goals was to share my love of cooking and baking. I wanted you to know that anyone could cook and bake if they wanted to. If the thing that has held you back was you never had anyone to show you, then I would help bridge the gaps in your kitchen experience. Based on that, I have decided to occasionally weave in a blog post that shows you how to do something that you may not have thought of or had any inkling how to do. It could be a sauce, gravy, a basic biscuit, substitutions, canning, how to work with yeast, etc. You may already know what I am going to show you, but based on my conversations with others, many do not. Homemade Brown Sugar is my first post specific to “The Basics.”

I, too, didnt know how to do something this basic. We normally use molasses in things like BBQ sauce or baked beans. We usually have a jar of Grandmas molasses on hand for just those occasions. Now, in a pinch, we can use it to make a basic brown sugar. Awesome!
